5,000??? FIVE THOUSAND Systems Explored!!!

That’s right, I just explored my 5,000th system…

Trying to find something to say…

Just no words, really. It’s a mind numbing number. Five thousand. It kind of rolls off the tongue. Has a nice ring to it. What can I say, I’m really happy to have made it this far and I can see the star light at the end of the warp tunnel. So, nice, so very, very nice.

Here’s the map, followed by some of my favorite images from Syndicate so far.

Actually seeing the end of my exploration of K-Space in sight… I just have to pause for a moment. When I started this journey, I honestly felt I’d never get this far. I thought I’d stop and give up or I’d hit some region of space that would prove beyond my abilities to explore. Twice along the way, I did stop for reasons I’ve explained before. Once, with the loss of my father, was for over a year. That was the last break and when I returned in 01.03.yc116 (March 2014), I’ve not stopped since. Soon, I’ll be passing five thousand systems explored. 5,000 systems! Not long after that milestone, I’ll be done with K-Space.

Here’s a bit of interesting information. While exploring Empire space, I would always stop at a station and dock for down time. In a sense, it was a cushy way to fly, being able to explore a few systems, get some rest, shower, have a few drinks, then start again the next day. While exploring Null Sec over the last year, I’ve only docked once – it will be a year this upcoming December. The lawyers demanded an in person signature in order to dissolve my corporation and join Signal Cartel. Except for that one time, when I finished my daily exploration, I’ve had to find a safespot in space, shutdown my systems, and hope that I’m not found. No showers, no drinks, no easy way to stretch my legs. I think my podgoo needs a change… ewww. You’ve no idea just how forward I’m looking to docking again and visiting my captain’s quarters!

As for a mission update, I’m on track and still on schedule to finish K-Space by the end of the year. I plan on posting each week an updated travel map to show my progress as I close in on completing Phase II (exploring Null Sec). Check the map out down below for current progress and you can see my history in my Gallery at this click.

The End is near! (In a good way) Then my insatiable curiosity will take me to wormhole space.

With less than 10% of K-Space (Known) left to go, I figured it’s time to make sense of the numbers. Looking at the upper right section of my blog, you’ll find my Exploration Statistics where I try to keep track of just how much I’ve explored of New Eden. There’s just one problem, ok, maybe two problems, they only reflect K-Space and they include several regions that are not reachable by capsuleers. Let’s go over just what I’m talking about.

HHK-VL II

HHK-VL II

In K-Space, there are a total of 67 regions which account for 5,431 systems as follows:
1,907 Empire Space
3,524 Null Sec
5,431 Total Systems

Explored as of today: 4,856 systems or 89.4% of K-Space

But wait! That’s not less than 10% left. What gives? I hear you ask.

MapGapThere are unreachable regions on the east side of the map. Two Jovian regions: A821-A and J7HZ-F as well as an unknown region called UUA-F4 (Developers test region). In total they account for 230 systems. As it stands currently, we’re not able to explore those regions. There are no gates that connect us to them. Jump drives apparently are unable to reach as well. We don’t have the technology to build gates to connect to systems that don’t have corresponding exit gates on the other side. Rumor is, the technology is being developed, but until then, we simply can’t get to Jove space or the unknown region.

What’s that mean for my exploration of K-Space? Well, it means I’ll not be able to complete it fully. So, I’ll do all I can before beginning phase III which will be exploration of W-Space (wormhole).

Systems 20151101

Systems explored as of 1.11.yc117 (Nov. 1st, 2015)

The adjusted numbers will be as follows:
1,907 Empire Space
3,524 Null Sec
5,431 Total Systems in 67 regions
– 230 Unreachable systems in 3 regions
5,201 Adjusted Total Systems in 64 regions

Explored as of today: 4,856 systems or 93.4% of adjusted K-Space

But wait! That’s not all the systems in New Eden. You’re right.

As I’ve just mentioned, there are indeed more systems to be explored that can be reached and they are found in wormhole space. They’ll add another 2,498 systems plus another 101 newly discovered shattered wormhole systems and Thera for a total of 2,599 systems.

1,907 Empire Space

Now reality sets in. Explored as of today: 4,856 systems out of 8,030 or 60.5% of all of New Eden.

In an effort to stay on track, I’ve made a big push these last few weeks. I’ve gotten behind schedule and I’m hoping to be finished with K-Space before the holidays. (Known Space which includes High, Low, and Null Sec). The drone regions were fairly empty, so I was able to maintain a steady pace, but once I hit Vale of the Silent, the journey became a bit bumpy.

Some days I enjoy playing the cat and mouse game, some days I don’t. Lately, it’s been a bit more on the enjoyable side and yet nerve racking at the same time. After the boredom and long runs of seeing few in local in the drone regions, it came as a bit of a shock when I entered Vale, Tribute, Venal, and Tenal. There’ve been plenty of pipes and pockets with people. (Sorry! I couldn’t help myself!) Not just a few folks, but lots of folks. Lots of activity. I know one thing, the closer I get to completing K-Space, the more nervous I’m getting, and the fewer risk I’m willing to take.

I did have one interesting run in. I got to meet Dirk MacGirk, of Podside fame, in local. To me, that has to be one of the biggest advantages that Eve Online has over other online games, the single shard universe. When you hear of some of the great battles in Eve, read blogs, and listen to podcast, among the many other things that go on each day in New Eden, they are all happening on the same server that you’re in. Anyway, we said hello in local, exchanged a couple of friendly in game mails, then a couple of his corp/alliance mates tried to catch me, I escaped, and our lives went on. I’ll make a quick plug here for his new show called Open Comms. You can find it on Twitch TV at the Mittani. Check it out.

One more plug while I’m at it. Roc Wieler has a new album coming out! Very cool. I admit it, I’m a fan, enjoy his music, and I’ve already pre-ordered his new one. The Eve community has some great talent and Roc is one of the excecptional ones. He’s a fan of the game and it shows. So, check it out. My personal favorites are his “YC113” and the “New Eden Soundtrack”.

Lastly, a shout out to Joffy Aulx-Gao, thanks for keeping up with me and Mynxee for offering to make a care package run out to me!

The Drone Regions… perhaps the longest, loneliest, stretch of space I’ve transversed so far. With the completion of the Kalevala Expanse, I can finally say I’m done with that area. I had also hoped it would be the end of xXDeathXx Space, but it seems that’s not quite the case yet. With just one more region to go before claiming the East is done, I’ll be Northward Bound.

As far as Null Sec goes, there’s not much on the West side, so the bulk of what I have remaining to explore in K-Space lies in the North. I eye it with apprehension, eagerness, and wonder. What will the residents be like? Will I be welcomed or scorned? What beauty will be found in the black? What evil lurks in the shadows?

I’m not one that usually jumps right on board with anything new technology’wise, but the temptation of Windows 10 for “Free” (still waiting to see just how free it is) was too good to pass up. I mean, like the Star Trek movies, every other release is the good one. So, logically speaking Windows 7 = “Good”, Windows 8 = “Bad”, therefore Windows 10 should equal “Good”. I’m still wondering why Microsoft skipped 9, maybe they wanted the even numbers to be good from now one. Anyway, on to my issue.

I did the usual things, I Googled for any issues in general about 10 and didn’t find anything too bad. For the most part, folks were saying good things like, best of 7 and 8 combined. Then I went and did some research on Eve Online vs Windows 10 and the only issues I could find were folks having launcher issues and offering work some arounds for that. Cool. I checked on other apps and games and didn’t find anything that would be a show stopper.

So why not?

NIM-FY XI, B-VFDD Gate

NIM-FY XI, B-VFDD Gate

I should have known better and it was a good reminder as to why I shouldn’t jump right onto something new, because if anything can and will go wrong, I’ll be the one to find it. Remind me to tell you the story of the first car I bought on my own, a new 1984 Ford Mustang Sedan. It ended up being the first with an electrical system issue that prompted a recall of that years model. Good times…

Here’s what happened. I upgraded and all seemed well. Actually for the most part, I’m pleased with Windows 10, no major issues (excluding Eve), some minor issues I’ve worked through (no sound in general), Cortana not talking to me (got sound working except for her) which I think it was personal thing, but I finally got her to talk, and figuring out where Microsoft moved everything to. They love to move and hide things so you have to find them again. Ugh.

So what of Eve Online? Well, that’s the weird thing. After upgrading, I checked out a few things right off to see if they were still good, Eve Online was one of those as I wanted to get some more exploration in. It worked great, no issues, launched just fine, game ran fine, so I kicked off some manufacturing jobs on an alt and logged off with the intention of coming back later. Well, it actually ended up being a few days later and in between that time and when I tried again, there had been some Windows updates and such.

S5W-1Z IX

S5W-1Z IX

I come back to Eve Online, logged in to my alt to kick off some more manufacturing jobs before I was going to switch over and continue my exploration and then it happened. In the hanger view, the game was so sluggish that I could barely click on the button to bring up industry. Then it was excruciatingly painful to click on blueprints and kick off new jobs. I finally was able to get some things going before becoming too aggravated and giving up. But the really bad news was, there was no way I would switch to Katia and try to continue my explorations of Null Sec with that kind of lag and performance.

No other game, application, local apps, internet surfing, etc, has that kind of issue. Seriously, Windows 10 has been great so far and for the most part, I’m glad I upgraded, but when it comes to Eve Online, I’m grounded, dead in space.

VW-PXL V

VW-PXL V

I’ve done the usual things like making sure my video driver is up to date, it is, and it’s one geared up for Windows 10. I’ve set Eve Online for DX9, instead of DX11, which actually seemed to improve performance a tad, actually not that much, but it did seem to make manufacturing tolerable. Still no way I’m flying, however. I’ve tried full screen as I usually do windowed, no difference.
With this being the only game having an issue, the only thing I’m left with is it has to be something with Eve Online itself. I’ve not tried an uninstall and reinstall yet, I guess I could, but I’m hesitate to do that just yet. I’m still hoping I can stumble into figuring out that one little thing I’m sure it is…

For now, the images in this post are some of my favorites from Malpais so far, until I’m able to restart my engines and fly again…

Sailing through Outer Passage and Cobalt Edge has been challenging. For the most part, it’s been stretches of silence filled with pockets of terror. Several gate camps were run and hunters evaded. Then in the last pocket today, one that I was already fearful of, I received a communication that encouraged me from Alley Cat of Eternal Monolith. He asked me what I was doing in the area and I replied truthfully about my exploration intentions, sharing my gallery and log. He replied with “Nobody from our corp will attack you. We respect what you’re doing.” Relieved and thankful, I expressed my gratitude and finished the constellation.

Now for some much needed down time to rejuvenate. Going silent into hibernation mode. I’ll have Aura wake me in a week. Enjoy some of my favorites from the two regions while I sleep.

Joining Signal Cartel was, indeed, the right decision for me. Hearing the corp chatter in channel has been refreshing, from the challenges of the rookies to the experiences of the veterans, it’s been great to be among fellow explorers. The corp is growing having hit 100 members in a short time and the culture is a positive one, just what I needed and wanted. I’m trying to do my part from afar, which is challenging in and of itself while exploring Null Sec, as the corp grows and settles in. Mynxee sums up nicely our ways in her blog post “Musings on the Explorer’s Way” and I think you’ll be pleasantly surprised to find you can still be yourself, yet be a part of something greater. If you’re interested in joining Signal Cartel, follow this link.

Since joining the new corp, I’ve had some interesting conversations in Null Sec. I’ve been asked a couple of times if there was a wormhole entrance to Thera in system. At first, I was thinking to myself how would I know and why are you asking, when it hit me, oh yeah. The rule of the day in Null is know who’s in local. I use tools like EVE Pirate’s Little Helper as well as bringing up pilot information and reading Bio’s, checking Corp, and Alliance information, when I’m in system with others. It’s a good first step to get an idea if you’re in hostile territory or not.

Sophia Hawkwood

Sophia Hawkwood

So of course it makes sense that I’m being checked out as well and with EVE-Scout quickly making a name for themselves with the hard work and dedication to Thera wormhole scouting, it’s only a natural when seeing my alliance of EVE-Scout Enclave to assume I’ve just come from there. It’s been rather funny trying to explain that I’ve no idea if there’s a entrance nearby, so I refer them to the EVE-Scout site, and go on to explain my personal mission. It’s actually been a great ice breaker and provides the opportunity to promote both Signal Cartel and EVE-Scout.

Setele Ymont

Setele Ymont

It’s refreshing to have that long eerie silence finally broken between the in corp and alliance channels as well as the questions in local, but also by the casual and encouraging conversations about my journey. On two separate occasions this last week, I had the pleasure of meeting a couple of fellow capsuleers. Both were pleasant and curious about my exploration. Sophia Hawkwood of Hawkwood Executive Interstellar Secure Transport, I met in system 5-MQQ7, and Setele Ymont of Phoebe Freeport Republic, I met in system 4-CM8I. I do wish to express my thanks to Phoebe Freeport Republic for their kind offer of docking as well as allowing me to pass through unhindered.

All in all, this past week has reenergized my spirit, like getting my second wind, while I look to the remainder of Null Sec exploration.

Perhaps this has happened to you, that moment when you first meet someone and feel like you’ve known them a lifetime or more. Or maybe you’ve read something that resonates with your very being, to your core, and you know it to be true. Or that moment upon hearing or seeing something and you know it’s meant to be.

03 KS-1TS III, Cat in Station

KS-1TS III, Cat in Station

When I began my exploration journey over five years ago now, there wasn’t any exploration corporations to be found. They didn’t exist, nor did I think they ever would. Likewise, I knew due to my own personal mission, I could never devote the necessary time and effort to grow a corporation and see to the memberships needs to make it successful. Yet, there have been a few exploration corps since then. Some successful and some not, but none that resonated with me. So, I had started Sagan Explorations as a personal corporation to accommodate my needs with the intention that I would never grow it.

11 Q-3HS5 XI

Q-3HS5 XI

But, the loneliness of deep Null Sec exploration has been eroding my determination to see this to the end. At first, it seemed that in every Null Sec region, I would always find someone that would strike up a conversation, ask about my journey, and wish me well. Lately, however, the journey has gone eerily quiet. These last few regions have been completely silent, with hunters now and then trying to seek me out without a word in local. It’s one thing to be hunted quietly, yet still continuing to receive words of encouragement from others. It’s another to be hunted, when you’re feeling completely alone in the silent depths of space. I’ve come to realize I needed that social interaction, that camaraderie of likeminded souls, to feel a part of something bigger than myself, to encourage me, to keep me going.

As fortune would have it or perhaps fate, Mynxee whom I had interviewed previously as part of the New Eden Explorer series, tweeted about forming a new corporation for explorers, Signal Cartel. Upon reading, I felt that tickling of the soul one gets when something is meant to be. I immediately replied with words of my support and encouragement for her new endeavor. Then I read the Corporate Credo and the envisioned Corporate Life and my soul began to sing. Home… has found me.

Portions of the Credo and Life that resonated. Click here to see them in their entirety and how to join if interested.

Signal Cartel

“Signal Cartel is a service corporation to all of New Eden… our goal is to look for a graceful resolution and set an example of dignity and friendship through our actions.”

“We embrace the attitude of a true explorer: we are friendly to others in our travels, neutral and never initiating aggression… In suffering losses, we respond with good cheer and shed no tears. In this way, we aim to be recognized and respected by all across the cluster and left in peace to do our work.”

“Among our own ranks and with others, we are patient and generous with knowledge, ideas, and experiences…”

“Signal Cartel members tend to be solo wanderers, opportunistically exploring New Eden far and wide to discover its secrets, wonders, and buried (or abandoned) treasure. Yet we are all connected by the ideals behind our corp credo which encourage open communication, cooperation, helpfulness, and a generous spirit.”

“To aid newer players who aspire to that lifestyle (Exploration)…”

07 4M-QXK VII

4M-QXK VII

As excited as I was, I didn’t want to immediately jump on the opportunity. I have a great deal of respect for Mynxee, her past experience of growing a unique corporation certainly gives credence that this one too will likely be successful, but would it be the right move for me? Sagan Explorations was more than just a haven, it was a tribute to Carl Sagan and Cosmos: A Personal Voyage, the one who first had awakened the explorer within me. I’ve always known I was an explorer, but watching Cosmos as a young teen, my eyes were opened to the wonders around me. It would be hard to give up that corporation name and tribute.

I slept on it overnight and by morning when I awoke, I couldn’t deny my explorers heart. How could I not join this new and growing exploration corp? So, that was that, my mind made up, I spent a great deal of time scanning down a connection to Empire space and after twenty systems finally found one. Landing in Orgron, Metropolis, I docked up for the first time in seven months, then respectfully dissolved Sagan Explorations and accepted the offered invite to join this new exploration corp. It’s not just about wanting what Signal Cartel has to offer, I had decided, it was about need. I only hope that I can offer as much as I’m sure it will give.

You can’t stop the Signal.

Even though I’ve not docked in 152 days as I explore Null Sec, instead living alone in and out of my pod on ship, I continue to receive news via Aura. The news of late has been far more interesting than usual. It seems there’s a new star in the sky that was discovered on 26.11.yc116 by a fellow capsuleer explorer, Caroline Grace. Intrigued by the news and not having noticed it myself, I eagerly cut my break short, stripped down, and jumped back into my pod to have a look. Sure enough, once I knew there was something new in the sky, it didn’t take me long to find it. Not too much is known other than, it’s getting brighter, seems to be in Jove space, and there appears to be some form of an accretion disc expanding outward from it.

S-XZHU II, Jester's Trek

S-XZHU II, Jester’s Trek

My exploration travels lately have me nearly to the edge of the New Eden cluster in the South West region of Null Sec, but even from here, I can see the new light in the heavens. It’s not as prominent as seen from closer to Jove space from the images that Caroline and others have taken, but it’s distinct and clearly unusual once you know to look for it. As to what it is, only speculation can guess at answers until more is learned. So for now, I’ll leave that to others, but I can’t help feeling that this is only a prelude to something bigger…

In other news, it seems the growing ranks of new capsuleers is on the rise. Almost seems to me as if in answer to the new star. Are we unknowingly preparing from something? Maybe it’s just my ancient ancestors whispering dark omens from times past when such events were the herald of evil times, but even knowing how foolish I am to think such thoughts, I can’t help the goose bumps along my arms nor the raised hair on the back of my neck. I’m sure it’s nothing, at least that’s what I keep telling myself, and in some ways I’m glad I’m flying alone far from Jove space, but its times like this I wish my Grand-Father were here.
